Purpose of a plastic surgeon medicolegal report
The purpose of a plastic surgeon medicolegal report is a formal report, which is a CPR court compliant document, prepared by a qualified plastic surgeon who acts as an expert witness. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of a claimant and their injuries sustained within the expertise of plastic surgery, their severity and their potential long-term effects. The medicolegal report also includes opinion on whether the injuries are consistent with the reported accident and the anticipated prognosis for recovery
Duties of plastic surgeon expert witness reports

Upon receiving an instruction from the instructing party, such as a solicitor, medicolegal agency (MRO) or insurer, patients are usually contacted within 2 working days and offered an appointment in approximately up to 4 weeks from instruction.
Miss Defty produces her medicolegal expert witness reports in a timely manner, approximately 7-14 working days following a medicolegal examination. These are then dispatched to the instructing party adhering to data protection and adhering to GDPR regulation.
Within the NHS, Miss Defty is currently the Laser Lead at Whiston and Consultant at STHK NHS Trust. Her current NHS post is a Consultant plastic surgeon at St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, with subspecialty areas including Mohs surgery, skin cancer, laser surgery, rejuvenation surgery and treatments. Since 2021, she has been the Regional Training Program Director (Mersey) and MOHS Lead within her post. Miss Defty is also a member of the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (BAPRAS).
Miss Defty also has a private practice alongside her NHS position and in this specialised area, she has great awareness regarding the impact which scars and disfigurements of the skin may have on her patients in everyday life, including the psychological effect if scarring. Miss Defty provides expert witness opinion on all aspects of scarring, including scars which may be suitable for surgical intervention, or injuries which require a less invasive approach, such as laser therapies. Miss Defty has plastic surgery consulting and treatment locations in Liverpool, St Helens, Merseyside and now in Preston, Lancashire. The new Preston medicolegal examination venue is based at The Therapy Company, which is regulated by the Care Quality Commission and located close to Preston city centre, with disabled access, a reception waiting area plus parking.
