Mr Richard Wain, FRCS(Plast.) PhD
Mr Wain completed his medical degree at the University of Manchester in 2006. Since then, Mr Wain has trained across the North of England in several of the regions prestigious Plastic Surgery Units. He completed his Plastic Surgery Training in 2021 and is on the GMC Specialist Register. Mr Wain also completed Specialist Fellowships in Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Liverpool, and Sarcoma & Lower Limb Microsurgery in Leeds. Mr Wain also completed an Aesthetics placement during training, to acquire specialist experience in a range of aesthetic surgeries.
Mr Wain now works as a Substantive Consultant at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he established the first Plastics Mohs Surgery unit in Lancashire & South Cumbria. Mr Wain is the Chair of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons Mohs Specialist Interest and Advisory group, and a member of the British Society for Mohs Surgery. He forms part of the Regional Sarcoma Service and is the Trust Specialty Training Lead for Plastic Surgery Trainees. Mr Wain also has a longstanding interest in research within plastic surgery.
Medicolegal Experience
Mr Wain is a medicolegal plastic surgeon in Lancaster. Mr Wain offers medicolegal examinations in Lancaster regularly holding clinics at this location. A Plastic Surgeon Expert Witness, Mr Wain has an overriding Duty to the Court: Evidence must be objective, unbiased, and uninfluenced by the pressures of litigation. Duties include document review, a clinical examination, to conduct physical or psychological assessments of the claimant to evaluate the extent of injuries, prognosis and future care needs, if applicable. As a medicolegal plastic surgeon, Mr Wain can receive requests to attend Conferences and provide Testimony and to participate in joint discussions with opposing experts to narrow down issues. He may also be asked to attend court or tribunals to provide oral testimony under cross-examination. The duties include supplying impartial, evidence-based opinions on medical issues to assist the Court in understanding complex plastic surgery cases, such as those involving injury or cosmetic procedures.

- Undertake Medicolegal l examinations, performing medical examinations on the claimant to assess injuries sustained
- Supply Plastic Surgeon opinion and prognosis in the form of a CPR report
- Remain within plastic surgery expertise, providing opinions on matters that fall within their specialized area as a Plastic Surgeon
- Liaise with legal teams, including Solicitors and Barristers to guide and assist them in understanding the medical aspects of injuries and the case
- Provide testimony if summoned and to appear in Court to provide evidence, explain their expert opinion and possibly to be cross-examined.
- Follow an evidence-based approach, basing opinions on approved medical practice and scientific evidence
