Expert Witness Scar Reports

What are expert witness scar reports?

We provide expert plastic surgeons and skin camouflage practitioners for expert witness scar reports, fully trained and who deliver concise, evidence-based quantum reports for the court. All expert witness scar reports comply with current medicolegal standards and are prepared in line with Civil Procedure Rules

There are various surgical and non-surgical techniques available to patients with scarring, therefore it is advisable for every medicolegal patient with a significant scar, to be referred to a plastic surgeon expert witness. These experts can provide opinion on the suitability of each different technique, to reduce the appearance and or functional impairment of the scarring

Skin Camouflage

This expertise of cosmetic skin camouflage is increasingly instructed for medicolegal cases in personal injury, serious injury, clinical negligence, and cosmetic treatment litigation where appearance-related injury affects confidence, function, daily living or future care needs.

Skin camouflage medical grade products are highly pigmented, waterproof, longer lasting, transfer‑resistant creams and powders which are professionally colour‑matched to the patient’s natural skin tone.

This specialised technique helps conceal:

  • Traumatic scars
  • Post‑operative discolouration
  • Burns and graft sites
  • Laser procedure complications
  • Cosmetic surgery complications
  • Pigmentation disorders

Laser Therapies

Laser scar removal uses concentrated light beams to flatten raised scars, fade redness, or smooth indented acne and surgical scars. Laser scar options include ablative CO2 lasers for deep texture issues, non-ablative fractional lasers for collagen building, and vascular lasers which can be effective to treat red or pink scarring.

Surgical Scar Revision

Our plastic surgeons provide specialist input on complex wound closure, soft tissue reconstruction, and functional restoration, because of injuries and accidents. Our experts hold NHS Consultancy posts and have vast expertise in scar management, including the treatment of hypertrophic scars, keloids, post-burn contractures, and post-surgical scarring.

Elements of expert witness scar reports:

  1. A Physical examination: to assess and provide a detailed description of the size, colour and texture of the scar, including the location on the body/face.
  2. A Medical history: this is compiled by reviewing GP and Hospital records which are relevant to the index accident, to assess treatment received, such as any treatments or surgeries performed
  3. A Prognosis: this is provided based on whether the scar has matured, will improve, remain permanent, or continue to cause any ongoing functional issues
  4. Any Treatment Recommendations: expert witness reports comment on future recommended treatments, such scar revision surgery, laser therapy, or skin camouflage

Expert witness scar reports include any psychological Impact of the scar to the patient, including emotional distress affecting day to day living, which may require an onward referral to a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

Expert witness scar reports – legal compliance:

All medicolegal expert witness scar reports must be Court compliant and follow CPR Compliance. Reports must comply with UK Civil Procedure Rules Part 35, ensuring they are suitable for court. A medicolegal scar report is used in personal injury cases to quantify the mechanism of injury, functional impact and psychological impact.
